Alex Prager at the National Gallery of Victoria

At Traffic, we’re always on the look out for inspirational work. I recently visited the NGV and stumbled across the work of Alex Prager. Prager is a photographer and film maker and bases her photographs on film-like images. The staged images use models in iconic film scenarios such as Alfred Hitchcock’s the Birds. The images are stunningly beautiful, provocative and slightly haunting. I loved the retro styling in the photography, every individual is captured in a moment in time. The lighting is dramatic and moody and adding to the drama of each photograph. Colour in each set has been carefully considered to reflect the film-esque quality of the work. I could easily imagine this kind of work in Vogue or Harpers Bazaar. The exhibition is intimate with about 20 pieces on display. Well worth a look while passing by the NGV.
